Thailand customs: prohibited items, vapes and allowances

E-cigarettes and vapes: prohibited imports
Thai Customs’ 2025 annual report lists electronic cigarettes, devices and liquids as prohibited imports under the Ministry of Commerce Notification of 12 December 2014 (B.E. 2557). A personal-use or duty-free allowance does not remove that prohibition. Thailand’s Department of Foreign Trade says the e-cigarette definition includes heat-not-burn devices such as IQOS; see our full vape, IQOS and fines guide.
The multi-agency summary on thailand.go.th describes importing as punishable by up to 10 years’ imprisonment or a fine of five times the goods’ price, or both, with confiscation. It also cites Customs Act 2017 section 244: up to 10 years or a fine up to 500,000 baht. These are the source’s stated penalty provisions, not a calculation of an individual case.
The same summary states that possession of illegally imported e-cigarettes under section 246 can carry up to five years or a fine of four times the price. Smoking e-cigarettes in public areas can carry a fine up to 5,000 baht. Other prohibited and restricted goods exist; check Thai Customs for the goods you plan to carry.
Compare allowances and currency thresholds
| Item or situation | Allowance or threshold | What to do or check |
|---|---|---|
| Personal belongings | Reasonable quantity, total value no more than 20,000 THB | The concession excludes prohibited/restricted goods and food. |
| Cigarettes and tobacco | 200 cigarettes or 250 g tobacco; 250 g of all types combined | Excess tobacco must go in the Customs box or the passenger is prosecuted. |
| Alcohol | No more than 1 litre | Excess alcohol must go in the Customs box or the passenger is prosecuted. |
| E-cigarettes, devices and liquids | Prohibited imports | Duty-free allowances do not permit prohibited imports. |
| Foreign currency | Declare over US$15,000 or equivalent | Some older official pages still show US$20,000; use the current cited threshold. |
| Thai currency / combined currency | Declare Thai currency over 450,000 THB, or combined value over 450,000 THB | Declaration is separate from permission to take baht out. |
| Taking baht out: general route | Bank of Thailand permission above 50,000 THB | Check the destination-specific exception below. |
| Taking baht out: listed destinations | Bank of Thailand permission above 2,000,000 THB | Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Vietnam and Yunnan. |
Duty-free allowances and the excess box
Thai Customs allows personal belongings in reasonable quantity worth no more than 20,000 baht in total under the concession, excluding prohibited or restricted goods and food. The tobacco allowance is no more than 200 cigarettes or 250 g of tobacco, or 250 g of all types combined. The alcohol allowance is no more than one litre.
Excess tobacco or alcohol must be dropped in the Customs box, or the passenger is prosecuted, according to Thai Customs. Do not treat the red-channel duty option as a substitute for the published excess-box instruction.
Red or Green after immigration?
The Red and Green channels operate at all major airports after immigration clearance. Green means nothing to declare or goods within duty-free concessions. Red is for prohibited, controlled or restricted goods, or dutiable goods over the concessions. Green-channel travellers can still be selected for examination. If in doubt, use Red; declaring an item does not make a prohibited import allowed.
Thai Customs describes flat-rate duty at the Red channel for non-commercial goods up to 200,000 baht, payable by cash or card. For the wider arrival sequence, see immigration, baggage claim and customs at Thai airports.
Currency declarations: use US$15,000, not the older figure
The CAAT AIP, Bank of Thailand Ministry of Finance notification and Thai Customs manual revised 02/2568 give the current declaration thresholds: Thai currency over 450,000 THB; foreign currency over US$15,000 or equivalent; or a combined value over 450,000 THB.
Some older Thai Customs English pages and thailand.go.th pages still show US$20,000. This guide uses US$15,000 based on the AIP, Bank of Thailand notification and 2025 Customs manual linked below. Declaring when unsure is safest. These declaration rules are separate from immigration proof-of-funds requirements.
Taking Thai baht out of Thailand
Bank of Thailand permission is needed above 50,000 THB when taking baht out, or above 2,000,000 THB for the listed destinations: Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Vietnam and Yunnan. Keep this permission rule separate from the 450,000 THB declaration threshold; one does not replace the other.
Frequently asked questions
Can I bring a vape into Thailand for personal use?
Electronic cigarettes, devices and liquids are prohibited imports under the notification cited by Thai Customs. The personal-belongings concession does not make prohibited imports allowable.
How much tobacco and alcohol is duty-free?
No more than 200 cigarettes or 250 g of tobacco, or 250 g of all types combined, and no more than 1 litre of alcoholic beverage. Excess tobacco or alcohol must be dropped in the Customs box or the passenger is prosecuted.
Is the foreign-currency declaration threshold US$15,000 or US$20,000?
Use over US$15,000 or equivalent, as stated in the cited CAAT AIP, Bank of Thailand notification and 2025 Customs manual. Some older official pages still show US$20,000.
Which customs channel should I use if unsure?
Use Red if in doubt. Green is for nothing to declare or goods within duty-free concessions; travellers using Green can still be examined.
